Novembre est le mois de l’ostéoporose et on en profite donc pour jaser de calcium et de santé osseuse.

A-t-on besoin des produits laitiers?

Avec le nouveau guide alimentaire qui a retiré le groupe des produits laitiers, c’est normal d’être confus et ne plus trop savoir quelle place ils occupent dans notre alimentation. Sont-ils vraiment essentiels? La réponse courte: non. Toutefois, ils offrent une bonne teneur en calcium par volume et un excellent taux d’absorption. Il faut donc porter plus attention à ses apports quotidiens si on choisit de ne pas consommer de produits laitiers.

Combien de calcium par jour?

Recommandation de Santé Canada: 1000 mg de calcium par jour
Recommandation de l’Organisation mondiale de la Santé: 500 mg par jour

S’il était vrai qu’un apport suffisant en calcium réduit à lui seul le risque, l’Amérique du Nord (grand consommateur de produits laitiers) n’aurait pas des taux aussi élevés d’ostéoporose. D’ailleurs, il a été démontré qu’un apport de 550 mg de calcium provenant de végétaux n’a pas augmenté les risques d’ostéoporose chez les participants d’une étude de très bonne qualité.

Comment diminuer ses risques d’ostéoporose?

1. Être physiquement actif

2. S’assurer de consommer suffisamment de :

– Vitamine D (un supplément de novembre à mars est recommandé)
– Calcium (plus de 500 mg par jour)
– Protéines (sans faire d’excès en protéines animales)
– Autres minéraux: magnésium, phosphore, potassium

3. Limiter les agents qui augmentent la déminéralisation osseuse:
– Excès de sodium (surtout par les aliments transformés)
– Caféine (limiter à 2-3 tasses par jour)
– Boissons gazeuses
– Alcool

4. Limiter l’usage de certains médicaments: un usage prolongé de cortisone ou d’hormones thyroïdiennes, la prise régulière de laxatifs.

5. Arrêter de fumer
